Balneotherapy

m3

Balneotherapy – (“balneum” means bath, bathing in Latin + «therapeia» means treatment in Greek) is a use of natural and artificially prepared mineral water for prevention and treatment of various diseases and for medical rehabilitation. Balneotherapy includes an external application of bath — for intracavitary procedures (gastric, intestinal, vaginal and other irrigation and washing).

This procedure is assigned basing on the disease indications, and for the prevention.

Balneotherapy has its own nuances. A certain type of baths shall not be taken at heart disease, the others, on the contrary, are actively recommended, even for those patients, who have suffered a heart attack or stomach or gall bladder operation. Differences are in the properties of water in a bath; they determine indications or refusal from the procedure.

The effect of bath mechanism is made up of the thermal, mechanical and chemical factors:

Mechanical. The force of gravity in water is weakened, muscles and skin smooth down, and their blood supply improves. If gas is dissolved in water, then gas bubbles produce mechanical effect on the skin.

  • Thermal. Warm water activates the blood flow in the vessels, improves metabolism. Herewith, the body heavily releases energy, loses calories and eliminates toxins, producing purification of the body. The effect is enhanced by alternating treatments with warm and cold water.
  • Chemical. Biologically active ions (iodine, bromine) and dissolved gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, sulphurated hydrogen) from the mineral water penetrate into the general blood flow and improve the lymphotrophy of all tissues.
